An introduction: DURGER KING, SPIN ON!

Hello, soon-to-be-conquered masses! It’s me, DK, coming to you from The Evil Council’s “secret” hideout in the center of Eyjafjallajökull, a volcano in Iceland. Strangely, the decor matches my apartment exactly. I’m here, of course, to make my inaugural post on our Spankin’ New Site.

Ooooh, man, ain’t it purdy?

But who am I? Who is this “DK” suddenly throwing words at your face?

I’m that guy from the podcast who just HAS to say something inane during the introduction section. You know, the one who in our recent SCIENCE episode repeated, with great fervor, “Fuck a CGI!”.

Did you pick it out, my voice? Good.

Okay, so, let’s talk about the man behind the voice.

I’m a guy that really likes that-other-stuff-what-ain’t-sportsball-or-lite-beer, things like anime, video games, tabletop RPGs, fantasy and sci-fi books, and so on. A NERD

“Well, sure, DK. You people over there at The Evil Council are ALL nerds.”, you might say.

To which I’d respond, “Uhyeah, ahem, you’re right. But it’s all about the shades, man/woman, the flavors!”

What are my flavors then? (gross…)

I’m the type of person who loves a well realized world coupled with a good story, foremost. All the flash and pomp in the whole world doesn’t mean a thing if it has no substance. I’m not saying those things are valueless. They aren’t. Just like anyone else I have moods where a simple purpose-made piece of media is just the thing. After a long shift in the mines, my body flaccid with exhaustion, my mind reduced to it’s reptilian roots, I’m much more apt to start up a game of Minecraft or Dustforce or queue up an episode of some fluffy sitcom. I can sit completely still and stare in one direction with the best of them. Do you know what gets me really jazzed though? Get’s my mindjuice flowing? Overloads my pleasure centers with frisson? Fucking, World Building. Character Development. Affecting Dialogue and Events. Quick and dirty examples might include: The Last of Us, Mass Effect, The Wolf Among Us, The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, Pandora’s Star by Peter F. Hamilton, Cowboy Bebop. It doesn’t matter the medium, if it has these elements I’m probably already a fan or a fan waiting to happen.

It’s from that seed that my vast tree of interrelated interests grows.

As a kid, I was the bane of my stepfather’s ideas of what a healthy child should be. I very much doubt that when he took on the task of helping to raise me that he expected to have to tell me to put DOWN the books and GO OUTSIDE. It didn’t matter much though. If he’d followed me out, he would have found me playing out complex and deeply imagined stories. Fighting grand imagined battles and taking on the mantles of, over the course of my childhood, thousands of imagined characters. From the time I was 10 years old, I’ve been an insatiable reader. First I raided my mom’s bookshelf tearing through her extensive collection of Stephen King and Dean Koontz books. When I’d worn out all of those, I would walk to the library and check out as many books as I could carry. (Sometimes more.) Searching out ever richer worlds to fuel my growing imagination.

This habit, I think, was the beginning of the man I’ve become.

After that I began to meet new friends. Friends like Eric (yes, the one here on the site), who after over 15 years of friendship still manages to help expand my nerdy horizons. He was one of those lucky kids with all the latest game consoles and, since he’s also an awesome dude, he’s always spread the wealth around. The memories of playing Goldeneye with him after school mark the time in my life when gaming went from a cool little thing to do when I wasn’t reading to a much loved lifelong pursuit. Much begging my mother for games and consoles ensued. Since then I’ve explored as many systems as I could get my hands on and, in more recent years, the godly PC.

It was around this same time that I found out that those cool cartoons I’d been watching throughout the years, the ones with the oddly drawn characters, detailed backgrounds, and deep stories were something more than curiosities thrown up by networks in weird time slots. Sure, I had watched Dragonball and Samurai Pizza Cats years earlier. This thing called “Toonami”, though, was the catalyst, the first time I was exposed to the word “anime” in a meaningful way. Watching shows like Tenchi Muyo!, Dragonball Z, Gundam Wing, Blue Submarine No. 6, Outlaw Star, changed everything. These weren’t like most of the cartoons I grew up with. Deep stories that touched on real human emotion and drama with characters that actually changed. Detailed and beautiful art. Exciting new powers, weapons, races, and worlds to explore. All from this weird country called Japan. AND, sanctified feces, they do these comics called “manga” too!

I was hooked. I became the prototypical Weeaboo in every since of the word and until around the time I turned 19 years old it was the great behemoth overshadowing my other interests. My love for it remains but I’ve grown more… sophisticated and eclectic, allowing other things to have equal time.

Like music. Or movies.

But that’s a post for another day.

I think by now you might have gotten the idea. The roots anyway. A reasonable sketch.

The great thing is, we’re going to have plenty of opportunities to get to know each other. I have such plans…. MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!

All this to say… hello and welcome to my blog and evilcouncil.net!

P.S. The first person to find a typo I missed and email me at evilcouncil.dk@gmail.com gets a prize :D!
